The doctor of the future

“The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human body, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.”

  1. This makes me think of our pediatrician - that is what she does. pediatricians seem mostly focused on preventative care. At each visit, we focus on things like nutrition, exercise, vitamins, etc for the baby. And only babies get regular "well visits"!

  2. We better hurry up and get to this future ... It is shocking that a new study (reported in Health Affairs) shows that the average child has THREE junk food snacks every day!

  3. Thanks for this quote Christina, I love it!! I still hope this is the future of medicine...

how did we get so far off track?

I heard a lecture today by a radiologist who was excited about the future possibilities of using radioisotope positron emission technology (PET) scanning to show people they have atherosclerotic disease, so.. um.. we could tell them to change their diet?

  4. I love this quote too. The more I think about it, the more I cannot believe how little training medical students get in this.

Kim, I'm so glad to hear you've had this experience with your pediatrician! We need more pediatricians (and adult physicians) like yours!

  6. I hope so!!!

Checking kids are following growth curves, asking about diet and exercise, asking how they are doing in school -- looking at overall health and wellbeing -- so important!
